A smart home refers to a residence that has appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, computers, entertainment audio & video systems, security, and camera systems that are capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled remotely by a schedule, from any room in the home, as well as remotely from any location in the world by phone or internet. In recent years, smart home systems have become increasingly popular among homeowners who want more convenience, security, and energy efficiency in their lives.
If you want to modernize your home and make your life more comfortable and secure, setting up a smart home system is easier than you might think. This guide will provide an overview of smart home technology, components, and steps for how to set up a smart home system from start to finish.

What is a Smart Home System?
A smart home system connects devices and appliances in your home so they can communicate with each other and with you remotely. This allows you to monitor, control, and automate various functions in your home from a central hub or smartphone app, whether you are home or away. Smart home technology provides several useful features and benefits:
- Remote Access and Control - Control thermostats, lights, locks, appliances, and more from your smartphone, no matter where you are.
- Home Automation - Program favorite settings, schedules, and automation rules for different devices.
- Energy Efficiency - Smart thermostats and lights help reduce energy consumption.
- Security - Monitor activity with video doorbells and security cameras. Receive alerts for smoke/CO detectors. Control smart locks remotely.
- Convenience - Ask voice assistants to adjust settings or queue up music and TV shows. Never forget to turn off your devices again.
- Integration - Many products work with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and IFTTT for a fully integrated smart home.
My Smart Home Journey
When I first set out to create a smart home environment in my own house a few years ago, I began by installing a Nest Learning Thermostat to better control the temperature and HVAC system (I was living in the lovely Montreal area in Canada, where you can literally experience 3 seasons in one day!). I set it up using the Nest app, programming the thermostat to follow my family's schedule and adjust itself throughout the day to conserve energy while keeping us comfortable. Next, I added Philips Hue smart bulbs in our most used rooms so that we could control lighting and ambiance from our phones. I also set up lighting routines for convenience and security while we are away.
For security, I installed a video doorbell and outdoor security cameras from Ring that integrate with my Alexa devices. Now I can check who is at my door directly from my Echo Show or Echo Spot without having to go to the door. I can also use the Alexa guard feature and Ring alarm system for additional security. To control it all, I use Alexa's voice commands as well as the Google Home app on my smartphone.
From the office to overseas, I'm running my home remotely! I've been constantly expanding my smart home, finding new ways to add convenience, efficiency, and peace of mind to my life - even when I'm nowhere near home.
Smart Home System Components
A basic smart home system has a hub or controller plus an array of compatible smart devices and appliances. Here are some of the most common smart home system components:
- Smart Hub / Controller - The central device that connects all your smart products. Some options include Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo Plus, Apple HomePod, and Hubitat Elevation.
- Smart Speaker - Voice-controlled speakers like Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod allow for hands-free voice control.
- Smart Lighting - Bulbs, switches, and plugs that can be turned on/off, dimmed, scheduled, and change color via smartphone or voice. Philips Hue and TP-Link Kasa are popular options.
- Smart Thermostats - Programmable WiFi thermostats like Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell Lyric can be controlled remotely and leverage automation.
- Smart Locks - Keyless locks like August Smart Lock Pro and Schlage Sense can be locked/unlocked and monitored remotely.
- Smart Switches - In-wall switches like Lutron Caseta allow for wireless control of hardwired lights and fans.
- Smart Plugs - Affordable plugs like the TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug Mini make dumb devices smart by allowing remote on/off control.
- Smart Security - Security systems from SimpliSafe, Ring Alarm, and Abode integrate with other smart devices. Doorbell cameras provide extra security.
- Smart Appliances - New refrigerators, ovens, and washing machines offer Wi-Fi connectivity for status alerts and remote operation.
Steps to Set Up a Smart Home System
Follow these steps to set up your smart home system:
1. Decide on a Hub or Controller
The smart home hub or controller acts as the central connector for all of your devices. It allows for automated schedules and rules. Options include:
- Amazon Echo Plus - Good for Alexa-centric homes
- Samsung SmartThings - Very popular Zigbee/Z-Wave hub
- HomePod Mini - Best for Apple HomeKit products
- Hubitat Elevation - Local processing and no monthly fees
2. Select Your Initial Smart Devices
Start with a few smart devices like bulbs, switches, plugs, locks, sensors, and a voice assistant. Consider which rooms you want to automate first. Don't go overboard too fast - start with the basics.
3. Install Your Hub and Set Up Devices
Follow the hub instructions for installation. For most devices, just plug them in and connect to Wi-Fi. Sync devices with your hub by scanning codes or entering serial numbers.
4. Connect Devices to Wi-Fi and Hub
Get all your selected smart home devices connected to Wi-Fi and linked to your hub. Create a separate SSID if your Wi-Fi is spotty.
5. Configure the Devices
Open the hub and device apps to configure initial settings like room assignments, notification settings, automation rules, and voice control options. Most are ready for use immediately.
6. Organize and Name Devices
Give your devices and rooms descriptive names. Saying "turn off the kitchen lights" is easier than referring to vague default names. Organize by room for easy control.
7. Create Automation Rules and Scenes
Use your hub or Alexa/Google Assistant to set up scenes, schedules, and rules like "front door camera notification when the package is detected" or "turn on the living room lights at 5 PM". Get creative with automation!
8. Enable Voice Control
Link your Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri with your hub to enable convenient hands-free voice commands like "Hey Google, set the thermostat to 72 degrees". You can read our article about controlling your smart devices with your voice, "Voice Commands: Control Your Smart Devices with Voice"
9. Expand Your System Over Time
You don't need to automate your whole house at once. Consider capabilities you want to add next, like security cameras, smart locks, or motorized shades. Build up your smart home system over time.
Tips for Setting Up a Smart Home System
- Ensure all smart devices work with your chosen hub before purchasing. Check compatibility.
- Position your Wi-Fi router centrally to serve all smart devices with a strong signal.
- Start simple with popular smart bulbs, plugs, and speakers for an easy entry point.
- Name all your devices properly and group them by room location for easy voice control.
- Automate outdoor lights and thermostats first to maximize energy savings.
- Review activation fees, service fees, and subscriptions before choosing a monitoring provider.
- Browse the "skills" or "actions" to discover new Alexa or Google Assistant features to try.
- Set up multi-step scenes like "movie time" to turn on the TV, dim the lights, close the shades, etc. in one command.
- Document your smart product specs and hub login details so you can easily modify settings later.
- Enable guest access in your smart lock app so you can easily let in house cleaners or dog walkers.
- If unsure where to start, consider an affordable starter kit like Philips Hue lights with the Echo Dot.
- Focus first on automating tasks that will save you time and simplify your daily routines for maximum benefit.
